The Original

The thermometer says it a hundred and eight
Been this way for twelve days straight
Weather man says there's no relief on the way
I don't know what I'm gonna do
I'm just sitting here sweating and feeling so blue
While heaven is only three hours away

I'm Medina day dreaming
I want to go where the water's clear and cool
All day long in the back of my mind I've been scheming
Thinking about how I can get back there with you

There's a rock in the river where the water's so cold
I could just sit there till I grow old
Every time I've been there, the company's been so good
I like sitting and talking with all of my friends
Hoping our time there will never end
I'd be there today, if only I could

and I'm Medina day dreaming
I want to go where the water's clear and cool
All day long in the back of my mind I've been scheming
Thinking about how I can get back there with you

If I have a far away look in my eye
Don't even bother to wonder why
If you ask me, I won't even open my mouth
'Cause even on winter's coldest day
I'll be thinking about getting away
Just waiting for spring when I can be heading down South

I'm Medina day dreaming
I want to go where the water's clear and cool
All day long in the back of my mind I've been scheming
Thinking about how I can get back there with you
Sometimes Medina day dreaming's the only thing that gets me through.

Sorry, I don't have an mp3 to link to. This is one of my earlist songs.

Another song about the same place is Jano's Big Rock
My oldest daughter snapped this shot with a 110 camera as we were leaving one day.

Above the rock, you can see a hole in the cliff from which the rock fell. There are other indentions in the cliff that look like doors into the rock face when viewed driving slowly by or by sitting up on a friend's porch and watching the shadows change as the sun moves across the sky. The Native Americans who inhabitied the area called the place Seven Doors. It is truly a magical place full of wonderful memories and inspiration.

What I Saw

Stephen and I have been thinking about clearing out of Austin. We love the town and all our friends here. Howver, Austin has gotten to be a much bigger place than either of us is comfortable living in. It would be different if we could live a half an hour out of town and be able to be in the country or if we could drive for a half an hour and be out of town. As it is, it takes at least twenty minutes to get downtown or anywhere else we want to go from out place in the south part of town.

One of the reasons for my trip to Santa Fe was to check it out as a possible place to live. It is about the right sized town. You can pretty much get or do anything you want or need there. The climate is nice. It may get a little colder than I like in winter but the mild summers make up for that. The best part is that you can be anywhere in town in about fifteen minutes. I am sure that it takes a little bit longer during peak traffic times but not nearly as long as it takes here. You can be fifteen or twenty minutes out of town and be in the country, beautiful country at that.

One of the areas that we have been thinking about is Pecos. My friend and I drove down there and the first thing we saw there was a horse that was out and eating grass right in the entrance to the village. That has to be a good sign.

I did not make very many pictures. Here are a few on the Pecos River near its head waters.

Schrodinger's Lotto Ticket

I bought 14.5 million dollars worth of daydreams for a dollar. The lotto ticket in my purse may be worth that much. As long as it stays in my purse, that is. As soon as I take it out and check the numbers, it is either worth a lot of money or it is totally worthless. In the meantime, I can imagine how I will spend 14.5 million dollars. A horse farm in New Mexico will be mine. It will be complete with a huge adobe house and guest quarters for all of my best friends to come and stay in indefinitely. I’ll travel the world starting with Equador and the Pacific Islands before touring Europe and the rest of South America. Then I’ll come home and ride those horses. My mother will have her own house as will my children and few close friends who may not like New Mexico as much as I do. Of course, I’ll maintain a condo here in Austin as it will always be home to me on some level.

I think of the piece of paper in my purse as Schrodinger’s Lotto Ticket. As long as I don’t check those numbers, these things are within my reach.

If I could add a soundtrack to this post it would be Dream On by Arrowsmith and maybe Don't Dream It's Over by Crowded House.
